Antimicrobial

Antimicrobial – Food Secrets

formerly: fungal infection

Some foods carry compounds that demonstrably inhibit bacteria, viruses and fungi in the lab. Allicin from fresh garlic is the best known; thymoquinone from black cumin and the essential oils of sage, thyme and oregano belong in the same group.

The antimicrobial rank scores exactly that property of the food — how many documented antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal constituents it carries. It does not score a healing effect: an infection belongs in medical care, and no food replaces an antibiotic.

Points come from allicin, thymoquinone, curcumin, sulforaphane and the essential oils of herbs. Points are lost to sugar — it feeds microbes — and to heavy processing, which strips the actives out.

The practical part: these compounds are sensitive to heat and to timing. Let garlic rest for ten minutes after cutting, because that is when the allicin forms. Add herbs at the end rather than cooking them through.

Frequently asked questions

Which foods work against fungi in the gut?

Strongest are raw garlic and onion, then coconut fat, oregano, cloves, ginger and thyme. They carry allicin, thymol and essential oils whose antifungal activity is documented in the lab.

The other direction matters just as much: less sugar. Sugar feeds the microbes in question, and it costs points in this ranking.

Which foods should you avoid on a candida diet?

Sugar in every form first, then white flour, sweetened drinks and alcohol. They deliver fast-available sugar, and that is what a yeast lives on.

What often ends up on avoid-lists unfairly: whole fruit. An unpeeled apple brings fibre that slows the sugar down — that is a different thing from a glass of juice.

Which foods work like natural antibiotics?

Strongest first: raw garlic, onion, sage, thyme, oregano, cloves, ginger and turmeric, plus black seed oil, coconut fat and fermented foods such as kimchi.

"Like an antibiotic" is an image, not a comparison: the effect is measured in the lab, not as a therapy in people. With an infection, see a doctor.

Which foods help against gut fungi such as candida?

31 foods in our database carry a documented antifungal property. At the front: raw garlic, onion, coconut fat, oregano, cloves and ginger.

What pulls in the same direction without needing any compound at all: less sugar. Sugar costs points in this ranking precisely because it feeds the microbes you are trying to be rid of.

Is raw garlic better than cooked?

Clearly, yes. Allicin only forms once the cell is damaged — by cutting or crushing — and it needs about ten minutes to do so. Dropping garlic straight into a hot pan destroys the enzyme before it has worked.

The rule for this whole ranking: raw and freshly crushed beats long-cooked.

What exactly does the antimicrobial rank measure?

It counts and weights the documented antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal constituents of a food, and subtracts what works against them. The result is a rank across 1000+ scored foods.

Antimicrobial is a property, not a goal like weight loss. So it never appears as the "best goal" above a recipe — it always sits alongside another goal.
