Frequently asked questions about seasonal and regional food

Which fruit and vegetables are in season right now?

The season filter in the Food Lab shows it: one tap, and the list shows the vegetables, fruit and herbs in season this month.

Why are seasonal foods better for the environment?

They grow outdoors instead of in a heated greenhouse, need little storage and travel short distances. A tomato in August needs sun; the same tomato in February needs a heated glasshouse or a long journey.

Which foods weigh most on the environment?

In our environment ranking, beef and veal sit at the very back, while wild herbs such as nettle and dandelion, hazelnuts and walnuts sit at the front. The Food Rankings show the ranking for every food.

How do I cut food waste in everyday life?

Shop with a list instead of on impulse, use leftovers on purpose and read the best-before date as a hint rather than an expiry date. More tips are in the Food Insights.

Are wild herbs a regional and seasonal alternative?

Yes. Nettle, dandelion or wild garlic grow on your doorstep and have a clear season. The wild herb identifier shows pictures, season and nutrients.
